In addition to building science and technology R&D hubs, Shanxi has vigorously advanced the development of core technologies, the introduction of cutting-edge technologies, and the demonstration of key technological applications, achieving breakthroughs in the green and low-carbon transformation of its energy sector.

Row upon row of white hydrogen‑production and hydrogen‑storage facilities rise from the ground, while hydrogen‑powered heavy trucks shuttle back and forth across the industrial park. Beginning in 2019, Shanxi Pengfei Group embarked on a strategic plan to establish a hydrogen‑energy demonstration base—the Pengwan Hydrogen Port Hydrogen Industry Park—aiming to build a modern hydrogen‑energy ecosystem that integrates production, storage, transportation, refueling, utilization, research and development, and equipment manufacturing. By 2023, the group had become the “chain leader” enterprise for the hydrogen‑energy industrial chain, a key pillar of Shanxi Province’s industrial landscape.

Coke oven gas is one of the primary by-products of the coking industry, accounting for approximately 60% of industrial by-product hydrogen. Due to a lack of advanced technologies and processes, it was previously mostly disposed of through direct combustion.

By leveraging technology to drive efficiency, even “burdens” can be transformed into assets. Pengfei Group has ramped up its investment in scientific and technological innovation, establishing a leading group and dedicated task forces for hydrogen‑energy research, with a focus on tackling industry‑wide challenges related to hydrogen‑energy safety, enhanced production efficiency, and process‑technology improvements. The company is also building a demonstration base for the commercialization of hydrogen‑energy technologies in Shanxi Province, and numerous innovative breakthroughs have already been translated into practical applications in production.

According to a spokesperson from Pengfei Group, the next step will be to deepen cooperation with leading enterprises both within and outside the province in areas such as technological innovation, industrial synergy, and market expansion, aiming to achieve the vision of “one enterprise driving an entire industrial chain, and one chain fostering a thriving regional ecosystem,” thereby building a hydrogen‑energy industry worth hundreds of billions of yuan.
