On January 17, the People’s Daily once again spotlighted Pengfei Group’s development of the hydrogen energy industry, publishing an article titled “Shanxi Pengfei Group: Deeply Cultivating the Hydrogen Energy Sector to Empower a Better Life.” Through a series of compelling statistics, the piece highlights Pengfei Group’s vigorous efforts to advance high-quality growth in the hydrogen energy sector and accelerate the creation of new business models and a new economy centered on hydrogen.

To help achieve the goals of peaking carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality, deepen the energy production and consumption revolution, actively build a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient energy system, and promote the high-quality development of the hydrogen energy industry, Shanxi Pengfei Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Shanxi Pengfei Group”) bravely shoulders its mission as an energy enterprise, proactively integrates into the national overall layout of the hydrogen energy industry, and makes every effort to forge new pathways for the development of the hydrogen energy sector. Beginning in 2019, Shanxi Pengfei Group embarked on a bold exploration, strategically planning and developing the Pengwan Hydrogen Port Hydrogen Industry Park—a world‑leading hydrogen energy demonstration base—aiming to build a modern hydrogen industry ecosystem that integrates hydrogen production, storage, transportation, refueling, utilization, research and development, and equipment manufacturing. The overall plan encompasses 200,000 tons per year of hydrogen produced from coke oven off‑gas, 5 GW of wind‑solar‑hydrogen electrolysis capacity to generate 100,000 tons of green hydrogen, 100 integrated hydrogen‑refueling energy islands, 300,000 hydrogen‑powered heavy‑duty trucks, along with supporting components such as fuel cell stacks, fuel cell systems, and hydrogen supply systems, as well as 10 GW of battery capacity.

At present, construction of the Pengwan Hydrogen Port Hydrogen Industry Park is progressing steadily. In hydrogen production, in July 2022, the first phase—a 20,000‑ton‑per‑year hydrogen‑production project using coke oven gas—was completed and put into operation; in August 2023, a complementary green‑hydrogen electrolysis project, with an output of 3 × 500 Nm³/h, was officially commissioned to harness waste heat from the dry quenching process at the coking plant. Furthermore, the park is actively developing renewable‑energy‑based electrolysis projects to produce hydrogen, thereby advancing the green development of hydrogen energy at its very source. On the hydrogen refueling front, four integrated hydrogen‑fueling energy islands have been built and put into service in Xiaoyi City, Shanxi Province, while construction of more than 20 additional such facilities in Lüliang, Changzhi, Jincheng, Yangquan, and other locations is proceeding smoothly, providing reliable fuel supply for the development of hydrogen‑powered transportation and promoting the clean substitution of conventional fuels. In terms of hydrogen applications, the first batch of 100 hydrogen‑powered heavy trucks entered service in November 2022, followed by a second batch of another 100 in December 2023; also in 2023, the first three hydrogen‑powered buses, the country’s first hydrogen‑powered midibus, the first hydrogen‑powered loader, and five hydrogen‑powered buses in Xiaoyi City were successively put into operation. Plans call for deploying 500 hydrogen‑electric shared bicycles in Xiaoyi’s urban area this March, with the fleet expanding to 3,000 by year’s end. Regarding hydrogen‑equipment manufacturing, Pengfei Zhichuang has secured land for a project that will produce 300,000 hydrogen‑powered heavy trucks, hydrogen‑powered construction machinery, and related components—including fuel cells, powertrains, and hydrogen‑supply systems—with an initial capacity of 30,000 units per year. Approval procedures are currently underway. In the realm of innovation, the company will collaborate with leading domestic enterprises and top universities to establish joint laboratories for fuel‑cell vehicle manufacturing technology and key provincial laboratories focusing on advanced carbon‑based electrode materials, as well as a national postdoctoral research workstation, thereby creating a demonstration base for the commercialization of hydrogen‑related scientific and technological advances in Shanxi Province. Meanwhile, Shanxi Pengfei Group will deepen cooperation with industry leaders both within and outside the province—covering technological innovation, industrial synergy, and market expansion—to achieve the goal of “one enterprise driving an entire industrial chain, and one chain fostering regional development.”

Actively develop a specialized town centered on hydrogen energy, and plan and deploy the “Hydrogen to Every Home: Hydrogen Energy Town” science and technology demonstration project. Vigorously promote green mobility, focus on the hydrogen‑based health industry, and guide and encourage enterprises and residents to learn about, work with, start businesses around, invest in, build around, conduct R&D on, and consume hydrogen—enjoying the improved quality of life that hydrogen energy brings. Strive to cultivate a hydrogen‑energy industry worth hundreds of billions of yuan, establish a specialized town with distinctive hydrogen‑energy characteristics, and realize the vision of “using hydrogen in daily life, basing production on hydrogen, and enriching every household through hydrogen energy.”
