Following the official release on the National Group Standards Information Platform earlier this year of two group standards for producing high-purity hydrogen from coke oven gas—formulated under the leadership of Pengfei Hydrogen Production Plant and Zhengwang Hydrogen Energy—on September 4, two additional green‑hydrogen industry group standards, co‑developed with Pengfei Hydrogen Production Plant, were likewise officially published on the same platform. This marks Pengfei Hydrogen Energy as the only enterprise nationwide to simultaneously hold group standards for both coke‑oven gas‑based hydrogen production and water electrolysis‑based hydrogen production.

As a key green hydrogen‑production technology, water electrolysis is widely deployed across numerous sectors, including distributed renewable‑energy power plants and hydrogen‑based metallurgy, and boasts significant potential for further development. The formulation of two industry group standards for green hydrogen represents a concrete step in implementing national industrial policies, helping to accelerate the establishment of an innovation‑driven hydrogen‑energy system. These standards provide clear technical requirements and normative specifications for the processes, technologies, energy‑efficiency ratings, and safety management of water‑electrolysis hydrogen‑production systems, thereby playing a vital role in fostering the healthy, orderly growth of the green hydrogen industry and in building a new, high‑quality productive force in the hydrogen economy.

From hydrogen production via coke‑oven gas to electrolysis of water, both processes represent entirely new technologies and standards in the province—developed from scratch. As the first entity to implement them, Pengfei Hydrogen Energy has undertaken every step—from plant construction and equipment installation to commissioning, stable operation, and standard‑setting—with each phase marked by pioneering efforts and meticulous exploration in the hydrogen energy field. As Jie Dong, chief engineer of Pengfei’s methanol‑to‑hydrogen thermal‑source plant, puts it: “To establish a standard, one must be mentally prepared to engage in sustained, iterative experimentation, work tirelessly, and pursue painstaking, meticulous refinement in that domain.”

To ensure that the experience and best practices gained by Pengfei Hydrogen Energy benefit a broader range of hydrogen‑production enterprises, Pengfei Hydrogen Energy established a dedicated research‑project leadership and task‑force team, led by its chief engineer and comprising more than ten members—including mentors from specialized academic institutions, senior chemical engineers, frontline production engineers, and technical specialists. In October 2023, the company began planning the development of two group standards; in January 2024, the topics were finalized, and in March, formal approval was granted and the projects officially launched. Following the official kickoff, team members worked overtime around the clock, poring over an extensive body of literature and shuttling repeatedly between the laboratory and hydrogen‑production sites. They sought candid advice from experts at relevant universities and seasoned industry engineers, cross‑checked empirical data, and meticulously revised the draft document word by word and sentence by sentence. After more than 100 days and nights of effort, and following 13 rounds of iterative refinement, the final submission was completed. The document was submitted for review in August and officially came into force on September 4.

As the “chain leader” of Shanxi’s hydrogen energy industry chain, Pengfei has been deeply involved in drafting two standards, providing invaluable empirical data to inform their development and once again demonstrating its exemplary and pioneering role in the sector.
