On August 10, Professor Lai Xinmin of the School of Mechanical and Power Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University led a delegation to Pengfei Group to discuss matters related to the joint establishment of an advanced manufacturing laboratory for hydrogen‑powered vehicles. Zheng Peng, Chairman of the Board and President of the Group, attended the preparatory meeting for the joint laboratory.

Yi Peiyun, Assistant Dean of the School of Mechanical Engineering and Power Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, began by providing a brief overview of the school’s profile and outlined the joint laboratory’s mission and areas of collaboration.

Yi Peiyun stated that they will conduct joint research primarily focused on the advanced manufacturing of hydrogen‑powered vehicles, encompassing the development of next‑generation fuel cell powertrains, lightweight design for new‑energy heavy‑duty trucks, and vehicle assembly and quality control. He also expressed hope that this joint laboratory will help Pengfei attract and cultivate talent—encouraging them to come to Shanxi, to Lüliang, and to Pengfei.

Subsequently, Chairman Zheng Peng and Professor Lai Xinmin engaged in an in-depth discussion on the staffing of the joint laboratory’s R&D team, as well as the enterprise’s needs.

Lai Xinmin stated that the center currently comprises 30 faculty members, 180 enrolled students, and 180 master’s and doctoral students, all of whom will be dedicated to research in lightweight materials, quality control, and hydrogen‑energy propulsion. Furthermore, the joint laboratory operates under a bilateral affiliation model: research and experiments are conducted at the university, with timely communication and coordination whenever needs arise on this side.

Chairman Zheng Peng stated that the establishment of this joint laboratory exemplifies the deep integration of industry, academia, and research. Both parties should focus on delivering tangible results and, through collaboration with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, achieve win-win cooperation between a prestigious university and a renowned enterprise.

This joint laboratory represents a valuable opportunity: whether it’s exterior design or the entire automotive assembly process, we must align our efforts around this goal and build a sustainable, long-term initiative centered on it.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides also discussed the signing and unveiling of the joint laboratory cooperation agreement scheduled for September, as well as the detailed agenda for the Taiyuan Energy and Low-Carbon Development Forum.
