On July 13, Ren Lei, Vice Mayor of the Lüliang Municipal Government, led a delegation to Pengfei Group for a research symposium on the development of the group’s hydrogen energy industry. The two sides discussed key areas of focus, including advancing the construction of Pengfei Group’s hydrogen‑energy pilot‑scale demonstration base and exploring how technology can be leveraged to unlock greater economic benefits going forward.
Xia Hanqing, Director of the Lüliang Municipal Science and Technology Bureau; Chu Zhanfeng, Member of the Standing Committee of the Xiaoyi Municipal Party Committee and Vice Mayor of the Municipal Government; Zhang Youquan, Deputy Secretary of the Party Working Committee and Deputy Director of the Management Committee of the Xiaoyi Economic Development Zone; Zheng Peng, Chairman of the Board and President of Pengfei Group; Ma Xiaolong, Assistant to the President; along with other relevant officials, attended the symposium.
Chairman Zheng Peng provided a brief overview of Pengfei’s development plan for the hydrogen energy industry, stating that China’s coking industry is centered in Shanxi, and Shanxi’s coking sector is anchored in Lüliang—Lüliang being a major supplier of prime coking coal. Guided by the national hydrogen strategy and leveraging its industrial strengths, Pengfei Group is committed to driving the transformation of traditional industries such as coke oven gas production and prime coking coal mining toward low‑carbon and carbon‑neutral operations.
Zheng Peng: “Centering on the Xiaoyi Coking Park, we were the first to build a 20,000‑ton‑per‑year hydrogen‑production facility using coke‑oven gas. It went into operation on May 7 this year. Of the four hydrogen refueling stations planned, two have already been completed, effectively wrapping up our initial deployment across Xiaoyi. With the refueling stations now in place, we’re advancing Phase I of the Pengwan Hydrogen Port, which has a capacity of 20,000 tons per year, leveraging the total 200,000 tons per year of coke‑oven gas produced throughout Xiaoyi. Following in‑depth research and practical applications of hydrogen energy by the Lüliang Municipal Party Committee and Government, they have set the goal of developing Lüliang into a northern hydrogen‑supply hub. We are scaling this vision across the entire Lüliang region, aiming for a hydrogen output of 500,000 tons by 2035—achieved through three pathways: producing hydrogen from coke‑oven gas; generating green hydrogen via photovoltaic and wind power; and retrofitting existing service stations along Lüliang’s highways with hydrogen refueling facilities, while installing solar panels on the sun‑facing slopes of these highways to generate renewable electricity. By pursuing these strategies, we expect Lüliang to truly become a northern hydrogen‑supply port with an annual production capacity of 500,000 tons by 2035. From where we stand today, I believe this target is well within reach.”
Zhang Youquan expressed full appreciation for Pengfei Group’s development plan in the hydrogen energy sector, noting that the company enjoys a leading position in China across capital strength, corporate credibility, and application scenarios. As a flagship enterprise driving the hydrogen energy industry, Pengfei Group has consistently adopted a wholehearted and committed approach to advancing this field.
Xia Hanqing, Director of the Lüliang Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology, pointed out that the Shanxi Provincial Department of Science and Technology has conducted a province-wide survey to encourage enterprises to apply for provincial-level pilot‑scale testing bases. Pengfei should earnestly fulfill its role as an innovation‑driving entity, leverage science and technology to generate greater economic benefits, accelerate the construction of its provincial‑level pilot‑scale testing base, and translate scientific and technological achievements into real productive forces.
After gaining a thorough understanding of the production process and the technical methods employed in the coke‑oven gas manufacturing workflow, Ren Lei extended his congratulations to Pengfei Hydrogen Energy on its achievements to date. He believes that, in light of the company’s hydrogen‑energy development strategy—“One Core, Two Wings, Three Ports, Four Chains”—Pengfei Group has officially taken off. He expressed the hope that, going forward, Pengfei Group will further increase its investment in scientific and technological innovation, make the leap from “integrated innovation” to “independent innovation,” master core technologies, and strive to elevate Pengfei’s hydrogen‑energy standards and specifications to national—and even global—industry benchmarks. In doing so, the group can strengthen its innovative influence within the sector and accelerate the establishment of a pilot‑scale demonstration base at Pengfei.
Ren Lei stated: “Pengfei Group must demonstrate strong initiative and promptly create the necessary conditions. At the municipal level, from Mayor Zhang Guangyong down to all relevant departments, there must be unwavering attention and robust support for the development of the hydrogen energy industry. From a science and technology perspective, the Science and Technology Bureau should maintain continuous oversight, formulate a dedicated plan for Pengfei Hydrogen Energy, establish a special task force, and provide end-to-end tracking, guidance, and services. We hope that Xiaoyi City will further strengthen its efforts in providing services, guarantees, and support, thereby fostering an even more favorable industrial ecosystem for the growth of Pengfei Hydrogen Energy.”
Prior to the symposium, Ren Lei and his delegation also visited the Beiyao hydrogen refueling station and conducted an on-site inspection in the hydrogen energy control room. Liu Shiqing, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Lüliang Municipal People’s Congress and Secretary of the Xiaoyi Municipal Party Committee, along with Chu Zhanfeng, a member of the Standing Committee of the Xiaoyi Municipal Party Committee and Deputy Mayor, attended the visit.
