Introduction to the Lantern Festival

The Lantern Festival, one of China’s traditional festivals, is also known as the Shangyuan Festival, Little New Year, Yuanxi, or the Lantern Festival, and falls on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month each year. The first lunar month is called “Yuan” in the lunar calendar, and since the ancients referred to night as “xiao,” the full-moon night of the fifteenth day of the first lunar month—the first such night of the year—is accordingly named the “Lantern Festival.”

Lantern Festival Customs

Lantern Festival

The “lantern‑viewing” tradition on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month has become a spontaneous folk activity. On that evening, red lanterns are hung high throughout the streets and alleys—ranging from palace lanterns and animal‑head lanterns to revolving lanterns, floral lanterns, and bird‑and‑fowl lanterns—drawing crowds with their diverse varieties, exquisite craftsmanship, and eye‑catching designs.

Guess the riddle

Every year on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, traditional folk customs call for hanging colorful lanterns and setting off fireworks. Later, some enterprising individuals began writing riddles on slips of paper and affixing them to the dazzling lanterns for people to solve. Because riddles both stimulate wit and enhance the festive spirit, solving them gradually became an indispensable part of the Lantern Festival.

Eat tangyuan.

Yuanxiao, also known as “tangyuan,” are filled with sweet fillings such as white sugar, rose, sesame, red bean paste, osmanthus, walnut kernels, assorted nuts, and jujube paste, then encased in glutinous rice flour to form round dumplings. They can be prepared savory or vegetarian, offering a variety of flavors. Enjoyed boiled in soup, deep-fried, or steamed, they symbolize family reunion and happiness, while also evoking warmth, prosperity, and togetherness.
